It’s been thirty years since the terrifying abduction of twin sisters Rebecca and Molly Underhill by a deranged man who lived in a cabin behind their house in upstate New York. Fearful of retribution against their family, the girls kept the incident secret.
Rebecca, now a painter and art teacher, and alone since Molly died of cancer, suddenly begins getting strange and anonymous text messages—the first with just her name. Is Molly trying to communicate with her? Not possible, thinks Rebecca, who’s never believed in God or an afterlife.
And it couldn’t be their attacker from so many years ago; he was imprisoned for a similar crime at about that same time. Surely he’d still be in jail or dead by now—wouldn’t he?
But things get stranger. Rebecca’s art student Francis, an autistic savant, gives her a series of paintings he’s done. Rebecca, with increasing dread, realizes the sequence of scenes depicted in the paintings match the nightmares she’s had every night since the horrific ordeal three decades earlier. How could Franny know? Is it a ghostly warning of some kind?
Unnerved, Rebecca spills the whole frightening account of the abduction to her ex-husband and friend, Michael, who, dismayed by the story, vows to help sort out the mysterious texts and disturbing series of paintings.
What happens next is a frightening rollercoaster ride that builds up to a soul-shattering climax that will leave the reader checking the locks on their doors and windows…

It is almost a cliche that people hear messages from loved ones who have gone before, in dreams or in moments of destruction, confusion, or just plain longing. It's especially pronounced when the beloved is lost too soon under particularly tragic circumstances. When the loss is of an identical twin, perhaps there is a special sensitivity to such things. And in this modern world, what's a more logical mechanism than a text message on a cell phone. But when the message comes through an almost non-verbal, autistic visual artist as well, the stage is set for an improbable journey into a deeply painful past. The price paid to survive that journey is very steep. This is not a feel good read.Product details

The Remains edition by Vincent Zandri Romance eBooks Reviews
I didn't enjoy this book. I purchased the audible version and I had to force myself to stick with it in the beginning, reminding myself what I paid for it. The story was predictable and the voice of the reader was painful to hear. Hearing her say, "cry, cry, little kitten" was like nails down a chalk board. The story was mildly entertaining and I kept listening simply due to having already made the purchase.
This book has a promising beginning twin sisters were assaulted thirty years earlier, but never reported the crime. Since that time one sister has died and the perpetrator has just finished a sentence for other crimes he was convicted of. The surviving sister still suffers from the trauma of the attack and has been getting strange text messages. She thinks she is being stalked. Unfortunately, the author then abandons suspense for non-stop, unbelievable action. An aged criminal (whose motivation is murky at best) becomes a superman and we are left to wonder why someone with a cellphone and in grave danger does not call the police. Having characters engage in foolish and violent activity is not an effective way of creating suspense. There are no surprises in the second half of the book.
I enjoyed this. Interesting relationships, twists and turns. Our main character, Rebecca, works at an art school with her friend Robyn. There is a man, Franny, in the program about the age of Rebecca who is an Artist Savant who starts painting pictures of a time when Rebecca and her identical twin, Molly had been sexually attacked by a man who lived in a broken down house behind them. They were 12 at the time and they never told anyone about it. Later Molly died, but unrelated to this. This man was eventually caught because he attacked other women and went to prison for 30 years. Now I realize if I tell you more, there is no reason to read the book. And, really, I think you'd like it.
I read the second book of this series, The Ashes, first a couple of years ago and loved it! I , finally bought The Remains a couple of weeks ago and decided to read them in order because, a little birdy told me there was going to be a book three! The Remains is so awesome, I would never believe the author could top it! Rebecca Underhill, a sometime artist and gallery owner is struggling through her life after the death of her identical twin. She keeps having nightmares about an incident she and her sister, Molly had survived ,but never revealed years ago. Suddenly, their gallery's premiere artist begins gifting her with paintings that are exact replicas of these nightmares! How would this autistic savant artist be able to see inside her head? At this same time, she realized that someone is following her every move. It couldn't be the evil killer who haunts her dreams...or could it?I can't reveal more without ruining the book for you, except to say, you just have to read it! This author writes in a woman's voice perfectly and blew me away with his descriptions of feelings and thoughts, it's like none other I've read before now. It feels as if it's actually written by a woman! It's not a book you want to read alone at night unless you're prepared to be be terrified! This is a serious must read, as is the sequel, The Ashes!
This book was very well written. I enjoyed the way the author made the story fllow. It grabbed me from the beginning and kept my interest and I finished this book in less than a day. Each page makes you want to turn to the next page and just keep reading. Although this is not a "bite your nails" thriller, it definitely entered my head while I slept last night. That's the making of a good mystery, you remember what you read!
While I feel the author fails to convince me that he understands women's thoughts and feelings, I found his protagonist someone whose story I wanted to follow to the inevitable final chapters where she is forced into confrontation with her nemesis from the past. He can write, but he ought to stick with male protagonists.
There is a second failing and that is how monotonously the story evolved. Don't get me wrong. I liked his writing style and often found the book "unputdownable", turning pages quickly. I'm certain many people disagree with me, but I think the author can sharpen his talents in editing by studying English grammar and carefully deleting repetitive sections of text. I hope he continues to write.
