A forgotten town was defined by Henry Charlton Beck as “one whose earlier days have seen a part, however small, in the developing life of the nation, one whose presence contradicts its past and whose future may lose all contact with its birthright.” Beck says sometimes these towns were a year or two ahead of the time; sometimes they gave up just a little too soon.

Here an attempt is made to educate you about these forgotten towns so that you can appreciate the importance of the active communities once existing in the Pine Barrens.

Certain towns, not forgotten, very much alive and important to the Pine Barrens are also included, primarily as reference points.

Many locations are on unmarked sand roads. A topographical map is your best guide. Our map sketches lead you to the general area. Sand roads, for the most part, can be treacherous. An all wheel drive vehicle is recommended. Importantly remember that certain areas of the pines are out of range of cell phones. Proceed cautiously and respectfully in these pristine areas.

Towns Lost But Not Forgotten eBook R Marilyn Schmidt Reviews

I purchased this book several years ago when I first started researching the Pine Barrens of New Jersey and found it to be very helpful in learning how towns got their names, where to locate ruins and interesting facts about this incredible area. R. Marilyn Schmidt is a wealth of information and has clearly done her research well.

If you enjoy history, learning interesting facts or discovering new (or old, in this case) places, this book is for you!
The book was very interesting but it needs to be spell checked and the words are split in places so it was a little hard to read at times.
